A luxury kitchen renovation in Vancouver runs $85,000 to $200,000 and up. What that money buys is not decoration — it is material quality, tolerance and time.
The projects at this level are usually West Side houses, waterfront properties in West Vancouver and penthouse units downtown. They share one characteristic: the kitchen is a room people will be photographed in, so the details that would be invisible elsewhere become the point.
What separates a luxury kitchen from a mid-range one?
Three things, in order of visual impact: stone selected as specific slabs and book-matched across the run, cabinetry built to the millimetre with plywood carcasses and a sprayed catalysed finish, and an appliance package specified before the cabinetry is drawn rather than after.
| Element | Mid-range | Luxury | Cost difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabinet carcass | High-density board, 16 mm | Plywood, 19 mm, edge-banded and finished inside | +$4,000 – $12,000 |
| Finish | Factory laminate or spray on MDF | Catalysed lacquer or 2-pack, sprayed and cured in a booth | +$3,500 – $9,000 |
| Stone | Slab from stock, seams where convenient | Slabs chosen at the yard, book-matched, seams planned | +$4,000 – $30,000 |
| Drawer hardware | Soft-close undermount | Full-extension with integrated servo or premium runners | +$1,200 – $4,000 |
| Interior fittings | Basic shelves and a cutlery tray | Custom inserts, integrated bins, spice pull-outs, lit interiors | +$2,500 – $9,000 |
| Appliances | Freestanding, stainless | Integrated and panelled, column fridge and freezer, built-in coffee | +$12,000 – $45,000 |
Selecting and book-matching stone
Book-matching means two slabs cut sequentially from the same block are opened like a book so the veining mirrors across the joint. It only works if the slabs are reserved together at the yard before fabrication, and it adds roughly $2,000 to $6,000 to a kitchen.
At this level you go to the stone yard and choose the actual slabs, with tape on the slab marking where the island will be cut from. Which part of a slab an island comes from changes the result completely, and that decision cannot be made from a sample chip.
For a marble or quartzite with strong movement, we lay the fabrication drawing over a photograph of the slab and agree the cut lines before the saw runs. See granite and marble countertops.
Why luxury kitchens take longer
Eight to fourteen weeks on site, and 4 to 6 months end to end. Bespoke millwork takes 8 to 12 weeks from approved drawings. Specialist appliances are frequently on 12 to 20 week lead times. Neither can be compressed.
The sequencing consequence is that appliances must be chosen at design stage, not at the end. A column fridge and freezer pair, a 48-inch range and an integrated coffee machine each dictate cabinet dimensions, ventilation and services. Ordering cabinetry before appliances are locked is the most expensive mistake available at this level.
We build the schedule backwards from the longest lead item and hold demolition until the critical path is secured.
Details that only exist at this level
- Mitred stone edges at 60 or 80 mm, so the counter reads as a solid slab
- Book-matched full-height splashback continuing the island veining up the wall
- Integrated appliance panels with grain running continuously across the run
- Butler’s or prep pantry taking the mess out of the show kitchen — see pantry and storage solutions
- Lit interiors on glass-front cabinetry with motion switching
- Solid brass or bronze hardware left unlacquered so it patinas rather than wears
- Dedicated ventilation sized to a 1,200+ CFM hood, with make-up air where code requires it
